A HUGE SURPRISE AT FIRST AKC SHOW

Latead summer 1953 the San Joaquin County Fair also hosted the AKC dog show. I don't remember the exact wording, but one could enter either owner only or a class for professionals. Roslyn suggested I should enter the latter class as it would be less crowded.

It was a hot day, and the fair crowds were thick as we made our way to the dog show area. I bought a show booklet which had each class listed along with the name of the dog, breed, and owner or person showing the animal.

In addition to the ribbons for the winning canines, many groups were offering special prizes to members of their kennel clubs or training groups. Usually the prizes were trophies of some kind which would be awarded to the highest scoring dog from that group.

Prince behaved very well, and we scored in the high 190ies. She had the best score of any dog from the San Joaquin County Dog Obedience group. Our prize was a complete set of jumps and a dumb bell needed for Companion Dog Excellent work. There was the brand new white jump with stenciled numbers so one could raise it from 4" for small dogs to German Shepherd height. There was also a nesting set of broad jumps. A friend had to carry the equipment to our home in their truck!

This was our official first "leg" towards her obedience title.
We needed two more shows with qualifying scores before the AKC would issue a certificate for her obedience title.
