Never count your chickens before they are hatched I posted this blog a few years ago and I thought I would repost it today because some life lessons are worth retelling. This is a true story and after it happened I thought, this is a lesson that I needed to learn. The next time I will get a substantial deposit before assuming anything. There is a saying....When you are ready to learn the teacher will appear. He walked into my booth wearing a Brooks Brothers Suit,$300.00 Shirt,Manicured Nails, $200.00 Haircut and Shoes so polished that you could see yourself in them. He had a subtle smell of very expensive cologne about himself. You could tell he was in command of his universe (or so he thought). I welcomed him into my booth and made small talk as he browsed among my latest works of art. As I looked at him an old song by the OJays came to my mind(Money,Money,Money,Moneeeeey.. smile.... Through our conversation I learned that he wanted to buy several large pieces for his home. Eventually he selected several pieces that totaled $6000.00 and he wanted to have the frame changed on one of the pieces.I told him I would have to check with my framer. He said fine because he had to leave but would be back the following day to pay and pick up the pieces. I had not had a large sale in a while and I was thinking of what I was going to do with the Money, pay some bills, buy a new dress and might even get a manicure and pedicure. I was thinking of these things as I talked with my framer and they were happy to tell me that they had the exact frame that I wanted. I was as happy as feedlot Cattle in a thousand acres of oats. lol The next day he never showed up. |

Oh my how could anyone be so cruel If only you had gotten a good size down payment.

It seems that some people get their kicks by pulling tricks like that. I had a very similar episode some years ago when I was getting ready to leave the UK and live in the US. I showed Fuchsias and regularly won first prize with them at the Flower shows. When I was getting ready to leave I advertised that I had all my plants for sale and would hold that sale the following weekend.. A guy phoned and told me he would come and buy all my good plants and pay cash money for them. He never came!! I still think about that after all these years. Ah well........... Alfie...

What a jerk! How disappointed you must have been! Just shows you 'can't judge a book by it's cover'. I'm a clay artist and I have trouble selling - I tend to give pieces I really like to friends or family and sell only stuff that I have no attachment to whatsoever...lol My 'special' pieces I keep.

Hello Bright, that person was just a bluffer with fake promises, there are so many like him in all aspects of life. We have to laugh on them but it's a lesson for one and all. Don't believe only on words but on actions. Wishing you all my best.

What a disappointment, but a lesson anyone in direct sales like that learns sooner or later. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Yes, Bright, you no doubt did learn a very valuable lesson.... as a matter of fact, being in my own business I've been burnt twice over the years but also learned from that. I was as hurt as you were, something not forgotten but I've moved on as no doubt you have as well. Incidentally, remember that dear friend of mine I mentioned to you long ago whose background was in painting portraits? Well quite often her family and I tried to talk her into having a show (or taking them to galleries on assignment), but she often referred to those paintings (she had thousands) as her 'babies' and couldn't give them up. Well last year she had to sell her home (developed early dementia) & her family helped her move into a 'residence' (albeit very costly). She received an abundance from the sale of her home but I know she will likely need more and certainly the sale of those paintings would have helped greatly!! Her paintings are currently in storage..... what a shame!
