FotoFriday: S... oops! I'm really, really late. Sorry. Jan 29, 2012 10:24 am

I don't get to the computer a lot these days, but I did have an entry for this week's Foto Friday. Sorry I'm so late getting it posted.

The silly cat is trying to swat the cursor.
Smoke hangs low to the ground as field stubble burns on the Kansas prairie.
And a photo I took after reading one of AneMac's trivia questions about things that bug men... stockings hanging in the bathroom to dry.

Sooo... there are three "S" pics for you... on Sunday.

TAKE TIME FOR YOUR SPIRIT
Just put your ear down next to your soul and listen hard.
Anne Sexton

Oh, Anne… so simple… so deep and complex.

When I listen to my conscience, it usually steers me right, but sometimes that ole ego nudges me right or left. Most people around here would probably say it steers me solidly to the left. (Ha! Ha!) Ah… that may be true, but that doesn’t make it wrong. (Double ha ha.)

When I put my ear down next to my soul and listen hard, it’s a whole other ball game. I’m not just hearing right and wrong; I’m hearing direction. I might also hear correction, but I’m just as likely to hear affirmation. I always hear what’s good for growth and connection… inclusion in a greater good. I’m setting ego aside and allowing myself to be enveloped in love.

Is there a where? Is there a means of getting there? Yeah… I think there is, but I also think it can be various ways for people. Heck, I don’t have a set way. Some things work better than others… at some times. Some things work better every time… for me.

How do you take time for your spirit? What does that mean to you?

Noel... Noel... an update Dec 10, 2011 5:59 pm

Noel thanks you for your prayers, but asks for continued prayer support. The biopsy turned out negative for cancer, but she's not out of the woods yet. She has one of two things going on. It's either a fungus on her lungs or some other thing that I can't recall the medical name of. In a couple of weeks she'll be having exploratory surgery to determine which of the two it is. Both are treatable.

It'd be nice if they could just treat her without cracking open her chest, but that's not possible. If they treat her for the 2nd malady and that's not what it is, it'll just exacerbate the fungal problem.

In any case, she'll be in the hospital and out of commission for a week and she's not sure how long it will be before she can go back to work.

Speaking of lung issues... my boss's father has pulmonary fibrosis and is on a ventilator. This is not a good situation!!! She made an emergency trip to CA to be with him.

Pulmonary fibrosis is scar tissue the builds up on the lungs making it difficult to breathe. It sometimes even builds up around blood vessels making it difficult for blood and the oxygen it carries to flow. As I understand it, the blood cannot hold as much oxygen. The damaged tissue cannot be removed.

Foto Friday... Pets Dec 8, 2011 7:35 pm

My absolute favorite pet photo, I didn't take AND I've posted it here in the past.

The pics I took of one of our pets was kind of sad. My daughter wanted a photo of her dog before we took him to the vet's to be put down. Poor thing had severe hip displasia (sp?). Cortizone shots were no longer effective. The big black lab no longer could get up unassisted.

These photos are of many of the pets my friend Bob has had and/or still has since I moved to OK 3 years ago. I tell him he's going to be like those little old ladies you hear about that die with a house full of cats. He only has one cat at home, but there are a BUNCH that live in his warehouse. No problem with mice there!

RIP Col. Potter Dec 7, 2011 3:58 pm

I was a M.A.S.H. fan. I still watch the reruns occasionally. I don't think there's a cast member I really didn't like... at least not unless you were supposed to dislike them. lol... Even Frank had an endearing scene or two.

Anyway... I just heard Harry Morgan died. I was saddened by the loss. I liked his roles as Col. Potter and as Joe Friday's sidekick in Dragnet. He was a good actor.

Rest in peace, Harry... rest in peace.

Do you have a favorite M.A.S.H. episode or a favorite memory of any Harry Morgan role?

TAKE TIME TO BE CREATIVE

Make something every day. Make a song, make a move,
make a friend, make a difference.
Pat Collelo

A couple of weeks ago my boss and I were chatting and I made some comment about making real, true croissants. You know, those lusciously delicate rolls that have light, fluffy pockets of air in them and deliciously flavored with real butter. The first time I made them was the Thanksgiving before my hubby died. The recipe made 48 dinner-sized (as opposed to those sandwich-sized) rolls. I don’t think a dozen of them made it to the table that day!

Sherry started talking about how much she liked breads and how sick she was of many of us talking about the scrumptious things we make but never bring to share.

Aha! An idea was born for this holiday season. Today and the next two Saturdays we have invited our Associates to bring their favorite holiday treats to share with one another. They can be homemade or not… donor’s choice. Today we asked them to bring their favorite holiday breads. Next Saturday it’s cookies and the 17th is candy.

Today is my day off, but since I was one of the instigators of this little event, I decided to make and take too.

I lost my favorite bread cookbook so emailed my sister-in-law for 3 of my favorite recipes from her copy of the book. I haven’t heard from her, so went cruising on the net to find those that were closest to what I remember the recipes to be. While checking out some croissant recipes I noticed a link to Cranberry Scones. Yum! So, off I went to the scone recipe. I haven’t made them before, so this sounded like the perfect excuse to try them.

Off to the grocery store I went to get unsalted butter and heavy cream for the scones… along with some more flour and yeast for the croissants and cookies yet to be baked.

The scones turned out beautifully, but might have been a wee bit better if I’d used fresh or frozen cranberries instead of the dried ones I had on hand. Oh, well, they still tasted good.

Tomorrow I’ll be working on some Christmas presents. The sewing machine is already out. The cutting table’s set up. I have my fabric… so I’m ready!

I think my New Year’s resolution (which I almost never make!) will be to follow Collelo’s advice and make something every day. It may be a “thing” or it might be to say something that makes someone’s day a little brighter.

Today the letter is “R” so how could I NOT post photos of my favorite “R” people… my children Raymond and Rebecca. If there was the slightest doubt they should be my subject, there’s a bit of icing on that cake… and quite a few candles too. After all, today is my son’s birthday. He's 33.

TAKE TIME TO PRIORITIZE Dec 1, 2011 7:50 pm

The minute you begin to do what you really want to do, it’s really a different kind of life.
R. Buckminster Fuller

Back in the day when I was pretty much an internet virgin, I chatted with a fella that had worked for “Bucky” Fuller. Now being the worldly woman that I was (Ha!), for the longest time I pretty much didn’t believe most of what he told me. I was extremely cautious about giving out identifiable personal information. I’d heard all those horror stories… ax murderers and all that we are here in cyberspace.

This guy regaled me with pretty fantastic stories of things he’d done with his life. He’d been around some pretty impressive people and gotten to do some pretty incredible things, not the least of which was working for Buckminster Fuller. He sounded way too good to be true.

One day while we were chatting, I said, “Gee. You must have had a very privileged upbringing.”

He just laughed and said that, no, he’d had a very middle class upbringing. Maybe even a lower middle class upbringing. His father was an alcoholic and his mother the sole breadwinner and “parent” most of the time.

“Then how did you get to do all these things?”

I’ll never forget his response. He said, “I made it my business to be around the people I wanted to learn from.”

Let me repeat that, “I made it my business to be around the people I wanted to learn from.”

The man knew the things he wanted to learn and made it a priority to find ways to meet and get to know the people that would teach him how to become the man he aimed to become. Some of those people were writers I was already familiar with. There were also politicians and futurists like Fuller.

I still might not have believed him had he not sent me a newspaper article that verified his identity through one of the stories. On top of that, he told me where I could find other newspaper articles in a major paper’s archives if it would put me at ease. I also met him in person once and the man matched the newspaper’s photos.

He did what he really wanted to do and had a different kind of life.

For a time, I was doing what I really wanted to do. It was the same life in terms of work, but there were extremely rewarding differences. I got my priorities mixed up and lost my way for a while, but I truly believe I’m getting back on that path to finding those amazing and rewarding differences.

Noel… not the Christmas Kind Nov 30, 2011 7:49 pm

Noel is my neighbor. She’s young… mid to late 20’s and the single mother of 2 little guys… and a puppy. She’s very sweet… friendly… a vivacious young woman. We’ve only had a couple of conversations beyond the regular “hi” and “bye” as we’re coming or going.

The first real conversation we had was about a friend of hers that died in Afghanistan. His services were about a month ago. The Patriot Guard was here in full force… protecting the funeral party’s route from the Phelps gang of hooligans. She and her mother helped organize a funeral dinner that not only fed the family and friends of this young soldier, but the 2,000+ Patriot Guard. A number of local businesses contributed food and various supplies to feed upwards of 3,000 people.

It was an impressive show. My boss told me it was so touching to see all those men and women lining the street with their flags and motorcycles in honor of the young man who gave his life and to protect the family left behind. She and her husband, a Vietnam vet himself, were moved to tears.

Anyway… Noel told me that it was the first time she ever felt like part of the community since moving here twelve years ago.

This evening the conversation started with, “Can you do me a favor?”

“What do you need?” I asked.

Noel wasn’t sure if it was my thing or not, but if I’m part of a church, could I start a prayer chain for her. She had a CT scan today and, as her doctor put it to her, “There are more nodules on your lungs than I can count.” Six months ago, there were none. Tomorrow she goes in for a biopsy… not needle… laproscopic. If that doesn’t tell them what’s going on, she’ll go to a specialist and have her chest cracked open for a “fishing expedition.” They’ve ruled out TB and some other more common lung ailments. But whatever it is, it’s growing fast.

So… if you’re a praying person, please say a little prayer for Noel. I am.

This & That Nov 29, 2011 5:12 pm

I haven't had time to really come up with a cohesive topic that I want to write about today, but if I'm going to even come close to that daily writing of a blog I've got to keep plodding along.

Yesterday started off with being up at 6:15 and getting my little guy off to school. He has some problems with keeping up at school because he's severely dyslexic and moderately ADD. I was excited to hear that she's putting him in the local swim club. He tried out for the team this evening. I think he'll do well and that will give him something he can feel good about... successful at.

After getting him off for school, I indulged in an hour of massage therapy. My friend the massage therapist gives me a nice healthy discount that makes the luxury affordable.

On my way home, I got a call from my boss. Our stores "made the cut." (About 95 weren't so lucky, so I'm thankful to still have a job.) SHE was more worried about it than I was, so I thought it'd be fun to get some sparkling grape juice with which to celebrate. I got some "happy, happy, happy" cups and we (she, I and the other store's asst. mgr.) toasted to our good fortune. On top of that, we got 6 boxes of freight and had very good sales for the day.

Today was slower but that's ok. We still had plenty to do as our District Manager's coming to visit in the morning.

This evening I'll be spending some time making some Christmas gifts. Look out, sewing machine, here I come!
