How smart are SFFers? Very! Without research they knew personality affects health! How? May 12, 2012 7:41 am
114 Views

A few days ago this blog asked SFFers if being neurotic or excessively introverted could cause health problems in old age. We gave SFFers four responses: (1) Yes, being neurotic (a fussbudget, a negative Nelly, egocentric or self-absorbed) can cause poor health in your older years. (2) No, being neurotic does not impact on health at all. (3) Actually, being neurotic improves health but it drives everyone else to an early death. (4)Something else -- please comment.

Without research, SFFers knew the score! An amazing 95% correctly guessed that being neurotic or excessively introverted would cause health problems in old age. If you focus on yourself too much or too little or spend too much time alone, you may be wise to make some changes.

It is interesting that personality problems seem to increase heart problems, blood pressure and even c-reactive protein but not cancer. The increased health problems are severe enough that neurotic and excessively introverted individuals even have increased mortality rates.

There seems to be some justice involved with the heart and cardiovascular problems associated neurosis and excessive introversion. Most who have encountered individuals with these problems wonder if something is wrong with their hearts and, indeed, the outcome of egocentric behavior or too much isolation is increased mortality rates from cardiovascular disease.

Congratulations SFFers on being so smart! You know the score.

What's your take on all of this? Are our neurotic acquaintances reaping their just rewards? Do the poor things need help? Should we be keeping a careful eye on any neurotic tendencies we might have ourselves? Personally, I think I'll be laid back today.

If you are interested in learning more about personality problems and their impact on health, you can use your friendly search engine to find: "Neuroticism, extraversion, and mortality in the UK Health and Lifestyle Survey: a 21-year prospective cohort study. Shipley BA, Weiss A, Der G, Taylor MD, Deary IJ.", "High neuroticism and low conscientiousness are associated with interleukin-6. It true! Scientists now know that you can make your brain grow. Here's how. May 2, 2012 11:04 pm

For many years, scientists believed that the brain did not grow or regrow. Now, with modern imaging machines, scientists know they were wrong. Even adult brains can grow and regrow when challenged to do so. This ability of the brain and even the whole neurological system to grow and rewire itself is called "plasticity" and plasticity is common.

One fascinating recent study, for example, showed that even the brains of those with multiple sclerosis can grow just as do the brains of others. In this study, subjects were assigned to various information processing and executive function building exercises while control subjects were not assigned to such training. Those receiving the training actually had brain development that could be detected with MRI machines. Is this yet another reason to live healthy? Yes, yes, yes!

You can find some information on this fascinating study by using your friendly search engine and searching for "Cognitive rehabilitation correlates with the functional connectivity of the anterior cingulate cortex in patients with multiple sclerosis. Parisi L, Rocca MA, Valsasina P, Panicari L, Mattioli F, Filippi M.".

What's important is that you can make your brain grow and give your neurological system a rev. To some extent, you can determine how smart you can be. To start growing your brain, you can learn a new language, take up playing a musical instrument, learn to dance, or whatever. If you put your brain to work. you brain will love it and you will get smarter!

By the way, keep in mind that exercise helps your brain too. When deciding what to do for your brain, be sure to include both mind work and some exercise.

Above all -- have fun!

Chemicals in perfumes, personal care products and plastics contribute to diabetes, etc. Apr 20, 2012 9:38 pm

There is no doubt about it. We would be better off following some of the food storage and personal care habits of previous generations. Our health and the health of future generations are at risk thanks to the polluting and unsafe chemicals used by too many corporations more interested in money than in people.

Recently, chemicals found in plastics, perfumes and personal care products (such as cosmetics, shampoos, and conditioners) have been in the news because there is a consistent link between these chemicals and diabetes. At the same time, studies are suggesting that these chemicals even contribute to weight gain, obesity. cancer and birth defects. The evidence on the link between these chemicals and birth defects (which involve gender problems in baby boys) gets stronger by the day.

Some of the chemicals of especial concern to scientists are phthalates and bisphenol A. How can you protect yourself and others? You can avoid using plastic dishes for food storage, avoid eating canned food, stop using perfume and cologne and cut way back on cosmetics and personal care products. Instead of shampoo, one can use real olive oil liquid soap with a vinegar and water rinse. In place of conditioners, one can use real oils (a combination of coconut oil, sunflower oil, and jojoba oils is divine). These methods used by our ancestors are healthy and low cost. They are great for the planet too. They cause no known health problems and cause little pollution.

We can all help protect our earth for ourselves and our children and grandchildren.

If you interested in learning more you can use your friendly search engine to search for "http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17589594" and Genital anomalies in boys and the environment. Main KM, Skakkebaek NE, Virtanen HE, Toppari J.". These are just a few of many, many reports on problems with these chemicals.

We need to send a new message to corporations -- healthy and happy people come first!

What does research show about what makeup is most important to guys? Apr 17, 2012 12:19 pm
245 Views

When it comes to makeup, researchers have found that nothing is more important for the guys than red or pink lipstick. If you want to be hot, hot, hot, red or pink lipstick is the way to go--so say the researchers.

What do you think? Does red or pink lipstick do it for you? Which is better? Red or pink or something else or nothing at all?

I thought I would try out a little red lipstick myself? What do you think? Do I need to tone it down a bit? LOL

Here is proof, you can do anything! Apr 15, 2012 3:32 pm

Well folks, here's a lesson on the importance of a Plan B. I tried replacing the faucet for my bathroom sink a couple of nights ago and the shutoff valves did not function. What a mess -- water going all over the place. My sister's guy had to come and save me. Why didn't I make better prep for shutoff valves that might not work? Grrrrrrr!

I tried to redeem myself by snaking my bathroom sink and bathtub. Now that worked great for the sink but only so so for the tub. I have to think more about that. The little plastic snake device only cost $3.99. Wow! The price compares very favorably to the price of calling in a handy person. Ladies, you can do anything! Even if you have to call a guy to help out! LOL

What scientists say--can the right diet get your lazy pecker working again? Apr 11, 2012 11:44 pm
266 Views

The good news is that the research shows that the right diet can indeed help turnaround erectile dysfunction (ED). Some scientists have even found that faithful adherence to the right diet can successfully reverse many cases of ED in just two years. Indeed, the right diet can even help men with type 2 diabetes regain their sexual functioning. Now that makes eating healthy worth thinking about.

Also, if the problem of erectile dysfunction has not set in, it helps to know that a healthy diet is important to keeping the equipment in good working order. The research shows that a "dietary pattern which is high in fruit, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and fish but low in red and processed meat and refined grains is more represented in subjects without ED. In other words, to keep the pecker in fine working order, eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and fish and cut way back on red meat on refined gains. Some studies are suggesting that any more than three ounces of red meat each week is too much for optimal health.

It is interesting that when you take good care of yourself, you take care of the whole world too. When you are healthy and happy, you have a lot more to give to the world and that is good for everyone.

If you are interested in learning more about a few studies on this topic, you can use your search engine to search for "Sexual dysfunction and the Mediterranean diet. Giugliano D, Giugliano F, Esposito K." You can also search for "Adherence to Mediterranean diet and erectile dysfunction in men with type 2 diabetes. Giugliano F, Maiorino MI, Bellastella G, Autorino R, De Sio M, Giugliano D, Esposito K." and "Dietary Factors, Mediterranean diet and erectile dysfunction. Esposito K, Giugliano F, Maiorino MI, Giugliano D."

Eat healthy and live, live happy and live prosperously!

Can chocolate help you avoid heart attacks and strokes? Apr 3, 2012 12:15 am

There is so much good news about chocolate these days and scientists are confirming that chocolate is indeed not only tasty but good for you. In fact, "In a large European study of more than 19,000 volunteers, Buijsse et al. found that participants eating 7.5 grams of chocolate daily had a lower risk of myocardial infarction [heart attack] and stroke than those who consumed only 1.7 g of chocolate per day. During the 8 years of the study, there were 166 myocardial infarctions [heart attacks] and 136 strokes. The top quartile of chocolate consumers had a 27% reduced risk of myocardial infarction and 48% lower risk of stroke than the lowest quartile." But, watch out, there is no need to over do the saturated fat with your chocolate.

Eating healthy to beat the blubber can be a lot of fun. Try chopping up a banana and a raw apple (core removed) and throw them in the blender. To that add some cold water as needed and throw in about one (1) teaspoon of raw organic cacao powder (Navitas in my fav kind). The result is totally totally tasty and every bit as good as a chocolate candy bar which can be a no-no depending on ingredients. At the same time, the apple helps protect against a variety of diseases, the banana contains potassium that helps prevent leg cramps, and the cacao helps protect against heart attacks and strokes, gives you a little energy and ... Ooooh la la!

There is nothing like being sassy and drop dead gorgeous from eating right!

As always you can find the study by using your friendly search engine. You can search for "Efficacy of Dietary Behavior Modification for Preserving Cardiovascular Health and Longevity

The news on red meat seems to get worse and worse by the day. A recent study by scientists reported: For cancer mortality there was a 27% increase for red meat for men and 50% increase for wome... . For CVD (cardiovascular disease), red meat imposed a 27% increase in men and 50% in women... ."

A much, much healthier diet is the one adopted by Bill Clinton that includes legumes (beans and lentils).

Scientists and physicians know it is hard to overstate the benefits of exercise. On average, those who exercise regularly live longer, feel better and look gorgeous. Exercise helps in so many ways. Here are just are few:
  • Exercise reduces the risks from hypertension - if you have high blood pressure, regular exercise can help you decrease risk of having it kill you.

  • Exercise reduces the risk of early death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

  • Exercise reduces the risk of dying young from diabetes.

  • Exercise reduces the risks associated with smoking.

  • Exercise even reduces the health risks associated with being overweight.

All in all, exercise helps you live a long time!

If you want to see an interesting study on the many ways exercise benefits us, you can search for "Health benefits of physical activity: the evidence" by Darren E.R. Warburton,Crystal Whitney Nicol, and Shannon S.D. Bredin.

What do you think? Is it more fun to exercise alone or with others?
