When the sun sets tonight, go outside and look west. The planet Venus is in conjunction with the Pleiades star cluster. This only happens once every eight years, sooooo, don't miss it!

sprites-3 months early !!

The first sprites of summer are starting to appear in the skies of North America. The strange thing is, summer is almost three months away. these specimens were photographed from a new mexico observatory on March 30th. the sprites were so bright that they were captured as they occurred over oklahoma!!! Sprites are electrical discharges that come out of the top of thunderclouds, opposite ordinary lightning bolts which plunge toward Earth. Sprites can tower as high as 90 km above ground. That makes them a form of space weather as they overlap the zone of auroras, meteors, and noctilucent clouds.

this pictue is really fantastic. i never knew that there could be a rainbow at night. but if the conditions are right, full moon, moon less than 42 degrees above the horizon and rain, voila, moonbow. sure would be nice to see one. it must be wonderful to see that in the dark of night.

South Pole

This picture was taken at the South Pole on Sept. 1st by a researcher building a neutrino telescope one mile below the ice cap near the South Pole. The sun was not above the horizon, but the dense layers of polar air refracted the light and made it appear that the sun was above the horizon. Polar regions are famous for mirages, and early explorers had a difficult time not knowing what was real. Seems fitting with winter closing in.

This picture caught me and sent me daydreaming. What is so desired, so essential, to be in loving arms and watching the sunrise. The picture and thoughts it evoked are still with me. I haven't posted in a while, life has been, not so perfect lately. This picture helped to bring me up for air.........

This sunset is absolutely amazing!! It looks like it is on fire!! It was taken if France and shows how the dust and air molecules in the atmosphere scatter blue light more than the red light, so the red shines through. This really is a spellbinding sunset. The impossible decision, deciding if sunrises are more beautiful than sunsets.......doesn't matter, they both are Mother Natures canvas............

This picture was taken july 7 with the giant Arecibo dish. It is a 600 mile wide asteroid with a 200 mile wide moonlet, a binary asteroid system. Pretty big stuff to be flying through the planets orbits.

In this photograph ,the sun is setting behind the Portara, passing through the entrance to the incomplete 2500 year old Temple of Apollo on the Greek island of Naxos. The photographer is a Greek amateur photographer. He was marvelled, and it must have been a marvel to watch the sun pass through, virtually at apehelion, the point at which we are the farthest from out star. It is a fantastic picture, imagine to witness such event...........the air must have been vibrating.....
