SPACE

In life, we create problems in relationship and interaction when we do not allow our loved ones the space that they need for their own flights of fancy, activity and choices. That is my reason for choice of this tit le SPACE for my blogs.

Best wishes to all.

Wealth is not what we have but what we share. When you live for yourself, you are already dead. When you live for others, you live even after you are dead.

"Age isn't easy for a good man if he's poor, nor will a bad man ever be cheerful with himself even if he's rich."

"It keeps him from having to leave life in the fear of owing debts to men or sacrifices to the gods."

"No knowledge considers or prescribes for the advantage of the stronger, but for that of the weaker, which it rules."

"A just man tries to get the better of his unlike, but not of his like; and unjust man tries to get the better of both.

"What sort of thing is justice compared with injustice?"

"It concerns the way we ought to live."

"The arduous things that ought to be shunned for themselves but pursued for profit and a reputation based on appearance."

"Justice is practiced only under compulsion, as someone else's good - not our own."

"The unjust man enjoys life better than the just."

"To become a good guardian, a man must be by nature fast, strong, and a spirited philosopher."

THE IMAGE OF THE LORD Sep 27, 2011 6:10 am

NO OFFENCE MEANT TO ANYONE.

One sunny afternoon in New York, a priest was out shopping and he met, quite by chance, a vicar walking towards him. Naturally, they stopped to make polite conversation. As they were parting, the priest said to the vicar, "By the way, Vicar, before you go, my parishioners often say I look the image of Jesus Christ.... do you agree?" to which the Vicar scoffed, "You.... look like our Lord? I can assure you, my parishioners have all agreed that I am the image of Jesus Christ."

Before they came to blows, a rabbi was walking towards them, and naturally stopped to speak to them. They explained their predicament, asking, "Which of us, do you think, Rabbi, is the image of Jesus Christ?" to which the Rabbi burst into shrieks of laughter.

"You?..... You?..... Neither of you," and continued to belly laugh. "As a matter of fact," he replied, "I KNOW I am the image of Jesus Christ.... and I can prove it!"

The priest and the vicar looked at each other in stunned silence. "Go on, then, prove it!" The rabbi said, "Follow me." And away the three men went, walking through the main thoroughfare, down the backstreets and eventually arrived at a pretty seedy area.

Approaching one dingy property with a notice in the window offering, "French Lessons on the Fourth Floor," the rabbi said, "Here we are, follow me." And up the rickety stairs the three men eventually arrived at a door with a little red light overhead.

The rabbi proudly thumped on the door and after a scuffle from inside, the door was opened by a blonde lady in a negligee to which she stared at the rabbi and proclaimed, "Jesus Christ.... it's not you again!!!"

THE LIGHTHOUSE Sep 24, 2011 4:26 pm

At times I may be in situations where my life comes to a halt.
My efforts may not bring success.

I might not be able to move ahead in life.

But even then, I would not want to be a motionless statue.
I would prefer to be a lighthouse which is stationary;
but continues to guide ships which are passing along while recording their signature so that I can always guide them

My dynamism lies in that static thought of helping those I can and who need the help ...........

Have a wonderful day - everyone.

THE EARTHQUAKE YESTERDAY IN SIKKIM Sep 19, 2011 5:42 am

It was 18.10 in the evening yesterday when, having got disgusted with the internet speed, I decided to give up. I logged out, closed the computer and stepped out of the Study to go down and look at the idiot box and watch what the master magician, the God, had conjured for us mortals.

Singing to myself, I stepped out and as I did that, the Earth moved (not he Ernest Hemingway’s way) but in reality, then it shook and then it vibrated and the computer fell off the table, the door of the study, slightly ajar, started literally doing a forward and backward dance on the hinges. The hanging chimes (S must have put some 100 of them around the house) started their own cacophonous melody around the off beat music in the house to catch up with the bass of the banging door while little Zongmit, all of 7 years, ran up the stairs and jumped on to me knocking me down into the little low chair, sat herself on my lap and buried her head into my chest pushing into my armpit.

My three canine friends were not to be denied; out they charged from their little big kennel, the terrace which is their exclusive preserve except for S, Zongmit and me, where people can go only at their own risk and peril. Hearing me pacify little Zongmit, perched on my lap with her little arms wrapped around tightly around me, Bozo came bounding down, jumped straight behind Zongmit and sat there while his little Brother MoMo sat at the edge of my knee. There I was with three of them on my lap when their Mom Toffee had her hind feet on my toes and front paws on Momo’s bottom. I was properly pinned down worse than Allied tanks in the Desert by Rommel’s Afrika Corps.

That is when the second one, an after shock struck; it was considerably weaker at 3.6, against 6.8 of the initial one, on the Richter scale. That had old Parmanand, the house help bound up and hang on to the arm of my chair which I had now rolled on to the ground floor. The previous four occupants of my lower limbs had returned to their earlier position; so there I sat imprisoned by their affection and my own fears for my only wife in this life, S, my house and its contents and myself in addition to these other four. A few minutes later, I walked up to see where S, her sister and a family friend sat on their mahjong table staring into space through each other absolutely - motionless, helpless and speechless at this late stage some 20 minutes later. I consoled them and cajoled them into conversation which had me listen to all kinds of description of the acrobatics of their hearts and minds.

S refused to change to go to bed at night fearing she won’t look too decent running out in a nightie so she slept in her ‘kho’; it is also known as baku in some parts.

Power, mobile phones and internet all packed up. Only government service landlines worked, a miracle, but were so congested that no calls from or to us mortals could get connected.

Later I went to see our students, faculty members and other staff of the university where I now work. Fortunately, they are all safe and I told them all to call home in the morning. This morning, a visit to the Campus revealed no major damage there so it is a happy state.

Thank the Almighty for all the kindnesses !!

HAPPINESS Sep 16, 2011 4:54 pm

The sun's smiling face, lighting the darkest place
A beautiful rose that silently grows
An uncomplaining stream, that lets u wade supreme
The sky wide & blue, winking at u
Friends who show their cheer, whenever you're near

Little things along the way
that bring faith and trust to stay
A welcoming tree that lets u climb it easily
The fragrance of flowers, embracing the hours
A time that's spent in peace and content
Nature's perfection... love and affection
A scene to view, a sight to see expressing true tranquility

There are many gifts that life can bring to make it a success
But there wouldn't be a greater one than the gift of happiness

UNDERSTANDING WOMEN Sep 13, 2011 5:17 pm

One day a man was walking along the beach and found a bottle. He looked around and didn't see anyone so he opened it. A genie appeared and thanked the man for letting him out.

The genie said, "For your kindness I will grant you a wish, but only one."

The man thought for a minute and said, "I have always wanted to visit Hawaii but have never been able to because I'm afraid of flying and ships make me seasick. So I wish for a road to be built from here to Hawaii."

The genie thought for a minute and said, "No, I don't think I can do that. Just think of all the work involved: the pilings needed to hold up the highway, how deep they would have to be to reach the bottom of the ocean. Think of all the pavement that would be needed. No, that is just too much to ask."

The man thought for a minute and then told the genie, "Well, there is one other thing that I have always wanted. I would like to be able to understand my girlfriend. What makes her laugh and cry, why is she temperamental, why is she so difficult to get along with? Basically, what makes her tick?"

The genie considered for a few minutes and said, "So, do you want two lanes or four?"
